We went to Norway to interview Gaahl, lead singer of the band Gorgoroth. Gaahl really believes in this whole ideology behind what he’s doing—he’s not just some rockstar fronting a band. The thing with Black Metal is, in Norway, everybody is exactly the same. There’s nothing to rebel against, because everybody’s really well off. It’s one of the richest countries in Europe. There is no lower class, it’s like middle-class white kids everywhere—no one has anything to complain about. And he’s this sort of eccentric figure amidst this sea of contentment and sameness. The way I see it is, in America you have guys like 50 Cent who are supposed to be the “villain.” Kids like him cause they’re parents hate him, and that’s basically what Gaahl is. He’s their musical villain so to speak. But there’s a lot of different sides to the scene.

My mistake, I accidentally confused him with Varg Vikernes – as far as is known, Gaahl is not a killer.
But he has beaten and tortured people.
@surenopimp I agree with what you’re saying, but Gaahl has done more than ‘commit crimes’, and committing crimes doesn’t make you evil. Shit, who hasn’t committed crimes? I know I’ve done my share. But Gaahl’s gone beyond that – he’s killed and been linked to church burnings (which he quiet likely carried out personally).
Oh, and it’s pretty ironic that you’re using ‘fag’ as in insult considering Gaahl is one himself (as am I).

@surenopimp Evil is a matter of perspective. I don’t believe all the insane psychopaths in the world consider themselves evil, they might see themselves as ‘misunderstood. Although i have to agree with you Slipknot is definitely not as hardcore as Gorgoroth, and this comes from an un-biased opinion as i somewhat dislike both bands.
P.S I am watching this despite my lacking taste in black metal because the subject matter of the documentary interests me, not the music.
