We went to Norway to interview Gaahl, lead singer of the band Gorgoroth. Gaahl really believes in this whole ideology behind what he’s doing—he’s not just some rockstar fronting a band. The thing with Black Metal is, in Norway, everybody is exactly the same. There’s nothing to rebel against, because everybody’s really well off. It’s one of the richest countries in Europe. There is no lower class, it’s like middle-class white kids everywhere—no one has anything to complain about. And he’s this sort of eccentric figure amidst this sea of contentment and sameness. The way I see it is, in America you have guys like 50 Cent who are supposed to be the “villain.” Kids like him cause they’re parents hate him, and that’s basically what Gaahl is. He’s their musical villain so to speak. But there’s a lot of different sides to the scene.

From the roots of old school thrash metal, this misinterpreted musical genre of metal music is know as Black Metal. Black Metal has been an outlet to disillusioned youth seeking for a way out of internal conflicts with personal, religious or cultures differences.. This little scene has become the mark of National Socialism and have devoted acts such as church burnings and homicide (number is as high as 50 or more churches).

Black Metal Beliefs

The most popular Black Metal group is Mayhem and VargVikernes. Vikernes was convicted of the murder to Øystein Aarseth an owner of the label Deathlike Silence in 93. Impacting as it may have been, the anti-religious and Nazi views of Vikernes should not be broken as an expression of the thoughts of the musical genre as a whole. As with any culture or sub-culture, you find in black metal disputes in opinion and beliefs.

Variants in Black Metal Music

Pioneered primarily by group such as Bathory and Cruachan, Viking lore and mythology has had a big impact on the black metal scene. These so called “folk” and “viking” metal bands often use instruments that leave from the typical norms and opt instead to use more traditional folk instruments to compliment the common electric guitar, drums, and bass. Black Metal variants include bands with an ambient, symphonic and doom metal sound have been experimented. Groups have pushed with other music like old 80′s punk movement (crust) gothic and even industrial influences.

The Black Metal Impression

Black metal will proceed to develop as long as there are fans and a world to express themselves, for the band and for the fans. Glamorized or demonized black metal has had a lasting impression on the metal genre for indivdualism. It’s past rooted in bands such as Venom and Celtic Frost to it’s present and future being involved along by bands ever experimenting and shocking, black metal lives!

started hiking FOR REAL in 96, thanks to another freak (thanks Mekki) who gave me a map over half the forest around oslo. i still hike on a weekly basis, that means daily trips. i also got into forest preservation shit the last years, you can say i’m quite into the scene here. i do something called the KJENTMANNSPOST, y’all can look in up in GOOGLE.

CAMPING:
backpack weighs 20 kilos. usually i have to walk 1.5 – 2 hours with that backpack to find camp. i use A MIX of some classic personal fave spots and finding new ones(this year i expect to camp at ten familiar spots and hopefully up to 15 new ones). the forests around Oslo (Norway’s capitol city) are 1600 km2 large, so it’s enough to last for a lifetime. a man should have his own tent. but it is easy for me to say, the nature here up north is EXTREMELY camping friendly, not many dangerous animals or insects. 2 nights ago i woke up in the middle of the night to big birds mating games, that is some of the wildlife, but i am there for the ATTITUDE of it, to GET AWAY FROM PEOPLE and to drink beer and listen to music in the nature too. last year i had 23 trips, this year so far 4 trips (season starts in mid-april, lasts till september-october) (the date now is 3rd of May). it is weather related, like all outdoor interests.

it is a complete lifestyle, equipment, clothing, weather reports, orientation, maps, map reading skills, collective travel skills (i don’t use a car) etc. but it’s not a very expensive lifestyle.
